Bio:
I am a native of the Pacific Northwest, currently living in Seattle, Washington.
For the last few years I have been exploring the myth and reality of the American West and the idea of what the American West is in both the United States and abroad. Lately my focus has shifted to images that portray the outdoor lifestyle of the people who live in the Northwest...a lifestyle that has it's own myths and romantic ideals of rugged individualism, and solitude.
I am a relative newcomer to photography, starting my new career after working in Environmental Policy for several years. During a stay in South Africa where I was studying for a Masters Degree in Economic Development I met someone who turned me on to the possibilities of expression through photography. After returning to the United States, I moved to Flagstaff Arizona, where I took two great photography classes taught by Peter Schwepker at Northern Arizona University. It was in Arizona where I grew as a photographer and really explored various types of photography to see what I liked and what direction I wanted to go.
Since that time in Arizona, my life has changed much and I love what I do now. The immediacy of photography and the ability to express ideas visually is a wonderful thing and I feel very lucky to live this way.
I had a wonderful time at Barnstorm this year. I will do everything in my power to come back again next year to pitch in as part of Black team.
Please feel free to email me if you want to talk about photography or issues related to Economic Development/Environmental Science. I love to share what I know!
Also, fellow Barnstormers are always welcome to hang out with me in beautiful Seattle, Washington. Just let me know when you will be coming through town and I will find you a place to stay.
Cheers,
Kirk

I was wondering when our photos from this year's workshop will be available on Photoshelter. I still need to get photos out to some of my subjects. Thanks! Kirk Mastin
