Against the Odds Autism, a neurological disorder that causes permanent developmental disabilities, affects one in every 150 children in the United States. More than 50% of individuals with autism are non-verbal.
Daniel, 14, has known his foster mother, Sandra Stephenson, for eleven years since he was a child in her daycare center. Daniel was diagnosed with autism when he was two years old, but never received appropriate behavioral modification services. He still cannot communicate or use the toilet.
Daniel can spend hours gazing out their window in Austin, TX.
