Bio:
Afton Almaraz is a photojournalist specializing in reportage, portraiture, travel, and video documentary. Having lived in various parts of East Asia and the United States, Afton brings a diverse perspective and interpretation to his work. His work has appeared in publications nationally and internationally such as TIME Magazine, Newsweek, US News & World Report, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Stern, LIFE, The Guardian UK, Doubletruck Magazine and many others. Currently based in New York and working as a picture desk editor at Getty Images, he continues to work on a variety of personal documentary photographic projects. Photographic image archive is now syndicated through Aurora Photos.
Afton received his B.A. in Visual Journalism from the photography school of Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California. Prior to attending Brooks, he received his A.A. in Mass Communications from U of N in Kona, Hawaii. During his education at Brooks, he interned as a photo editor with the TIME Asia photo department in Hong Kong, the photo department of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and under legendary surf photographer Art Brewer.
Afton is an alumnus of the world renowned Eddie Adams Workshop XXI where he was awarded an assignment from Getty Images. His work has been recognized and awarded in the PDN Photo Annual 2009, the College Photographer of the Year in 2008 & 2007, Sports Shooter 2008 & 2007, the 2009 Special Recognition of Achievement award from Brooks Institute, and recipient of the 2006 First Year Award in Visual Journalism at Brooks Institute.
